Crafting a Typeface with Precision and Simplicity
Overview

Experimenting with Typography in a University Project

As part of a university project, I faced a unique challenge: to produce an artists' book by experimenting with one area of graphic design. Given my interest in typography and my desire to deepen my understanding of this field, I chose to focus on creating a typographic experiment. My goal was to explore the boundaries of typography by designing a typeface that was as simple and minimal as possible, while still being functional and legible.
Overview
The task was to design a typeface that embodied simplicity and minimalism, drawing inspiration from influential movements like Bauhaus and Swiss Design. The typeface needed to be custom-made, with each glyph mathematically designed to achieve precision and clarity. Additionally, the project required me to present the outcomes in the form of an artists’ book, as well as create a type specimen poster that would showcase the typeface’s versatility and design principles.

From Bauhaus Inspiration to Custom Glyphs
I began by researching the principles of Bauhaus and Swiss Design, focusing on their approach to typography and how they balanced form and function. With this foundation, I started sketching and digitally crafting each glyph, ensuring that the design was both minimal and legible. The process involved multiple iterations, testing the readability and visual harmony of the typeface.

Once the typeface was finalised, I created letter blocks that formed the basis of the artists’ book. These blocks were arranged to emphasize the geometric precision and simplicity of the design. To complement the book, I also designed a type specimen poster that highlighted the unique features of the typeface, demonstrating its functionality across different contexts.

The final outcomes—a minimalist typeface, an artists’ book, and a type specimen poster—successfully met the challenge, allowing me to expand my understanding of typography while creating a cohesive and visually striking project.
