Engaging Gen Z with a Purposeful Campaign
Overview

Bridging Climate Activism with Penguin Books

For a D&AD project, I was tasked with designing a set of merchandise products for Penguin Books, one of the world’s most influential book publishers. The brief emphasised the need to create a campaign that would resonate with Generation Z, a demographic known for its distinct values and unique purchasing behaviors. The challenge was to work within Penguin Books' branding and marketing guidelines while developing merchandise that would effectively engage this younger audience.
Overview
The task was to create merchandise that would not only appeal to Generation Z but also align with their values and interests. Research indicated that Gen Z is less likely to be swayed by traditional marketing and more likely to support products and brands that reflect their concerns and passions, particularly around social and environmental issues. The challenge was to design a campaign that would be meaningful and relevant to their lives, while still maintaining the identity of Penguin Books.

Graffiti-Inspired Visuals for a Cause

Climate-Focused Campaign

Understanding that climate change is a significant concern for Generation Z, I chose to design a campaign that highlighted the environmental threats faced by penguins. This approach allowed me to connect the Penguin Books brand with a cause that resonates deeply with this generation, making the merchandise more meaningful and relevant to their lives.

Activism Through Design

To capture the spirit of Gen Z activism, I drew inspiration from protest and graffiti art. The design featured bold, graffiti-style graphics that conveyed a sense of urgency and rebellion, mirroring the way this generation approaches social issues. This visual style not only appealed to Gen Z’s aesthetic preferences but also underscored the campaign’s message about the need for immediate climate action.

Meaningful Merchandise Line

By integrating climate activism into the Penguin Books brand, I created a merchandise line that was both impactful and aligned with the publisher’s identity. The products served as more than just branded items; they became symbols of a larger movement, encouraging Gen Z to engage with Penguin Books in a way that reflects their values and supports a cause they care about.
